St. Pat’s Apps

Posted on March 17, 2016 by Guy Atkinson

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, and we should start this article on a green note, right? Did you know that only 2% of the world’s population has green eyes? The most poisonous frog in the world is not coloured green – it’s silver! I remember celebrating St. Patrick’s Day when I was in school. I was taught by Christian Brothers and the city I lived in had some fiercely Irish history and ancestry. We used to have a parade along the main street. The trams, cars and buses weren’t allowed into the street and all the Catholic schools would march in a raggedy formation. The archbishop was there, a function he always attended, and we would all march past him, eyes left, eyes front, and before you knew it we were back in class. I actually opted to learn to play the drum to make the march a bit more interesting.

The day is still celebrated all around the world in many different ways and if you wanted to separate myth from fact, then check out the internet for the top ten facts about St Patrick’s day. It will have you scratching your head, like an Irishman. There have been a few iOS developers get into the spirit of the celebrations and some apps have appeared to make sure the day is not forgotten while you browse your mobile or iPad. There’s one called Leapin’ Leprechauns and as the game title suggests, you control these little guys like a Mario-style game by jumping them through 120 levels. Yep, 120! Join up with some friends and have a St. Patrick’s Day competition. Downloadable free with another app that you obviously have to pay for.

I asked my friend who works at an App developer company that you can check out here, whether they had anything to do with this app and my question was met with a furious shaking of heads. The celebration of the most famous Irishman who, by the way was Welsh really, couldn’t pass without a gambling site advertising their St. Patrick’s Day Blackjack fun, Leprechaun Las Vegas. Hopefully you get to find your pot of gold at the end of some rainbow shaped slot machine. Good luck!

While the Americans are proud of their Irish heritage, we hope it was a group of UK App developers who created and published Go On A Search, For The Kiddos and Make Some Photo Magic, all bent towards St Patrick’s Day and the colour green. I am usually talking about saving money and being thrifty and investing wisely, but today I thought I would get into the spirit of the feast of Ireland’s beloved Patrick and change the tone a bit. But after you have all celebrated with a nice cold glass of green pale ale and listened to a million Irish jokes, don’t forget about these things, okay? Otherwise I will have to contact you all on my app and remind you.

I’ve just re-read Richard Denny’s fantastic book ‘Selling to Win’, in which he mentions a time management technique that I learnt many, many years ago from an old boss of mine.
