What To Look For When Choosing Health Insurance

Posted on January 14, 2017 by Guy Atkinson

When it comes to choosing an insurance policy it’s important to make sure that you look at the most important factors.  Choosing an insurance policy is important since it can cost a lot in more ways than one if you take the wrong option.

Many people procrastinate when it comes to choosing an insurance plan, assuming that injury won’t happen to them, or that they have time.  However, it always seems that Murphy’s Law strikes when you least expect it.  Of course, the month that you’re in between policies, uninsured, you’re going to get in that accident.  Don’t roll the dice.  Set yourself up to be prepared for any unexpected occurrences that come your way and choose the right insurance policy for you and your family.

Here is what to look for when you are looking for the best possible insurance policy.

You want to make sure that the price reflects what you can afford and has lower out of pocket costs.   It’s important to familiar yourself with what their deductibles are, co-payments, and lower premiums.

If you find yourself scratching your head over these terms then don’t be afraid to ask questions.  Insurance agents are there to answer your questions and break down costs in order to give you a greater understanding of the greater picture of a policy.

Additionally, the internet is a great resource for studying insurance terminology and vocabulary.  Do some shopping around online to compare the different prices and purchase a policy that works best for you after weighing out all the details.

As with anything you are about to give your money away to, you want to make sure that it is a reputable source.  Luckily in this modern age all takes is a simple internet search to see what the general consensus is about a company.

Often times reviews can be mixed, but very often if a company is downright awful, it’s reviews will reflect that. Alternatively, you can ask around with your friends and family and see what their recommendations are.  You never know who might have a fantastic option for you that you didn’t even know about.

It’s important to know exactly what your insurance will pay for.  It’s easy to assume that your policy will cover a certain incident when in fact it doesn’t at all.

Make sure to read all the lists thoroughly before signing the dotted line.  It’s important to know whether certain medication you take is covered.  If you travel a lot, you will want to make sure that you have coverage abroad.

Ask the right questions based on your lifestyle, and make sure it fits for what you need.

I’ve just re-read Richard Denny’s fantastic book ‘Selling to Win’, in which he mentions a time management technique that I learnt many, many years ago from an old boss of mine.
